S-OIL offers 200 million won in scholarships to 78 children of fallen firefighters
● On Aug. 29, S-OIL held a Scholarship Donation Ceremony for Children of Fallen Firefighters at Yeongdeungpo Fire Station.
Since 2006, the refiner has conducted various activities to support firefighters’ families as part of its Hero Firefighters Support Program.
S-OIL(CEO Nasser Al-Mahasher) held its “Scholarship Donation Ceremony for Children of Fallen Firefighters” at Yeongdeungpo Fire Station in Seoul on Aug. 29 and offered 200 million won to 78 students. On the day, S-OIL offered two to three million won in scholarships to children of firefighters who died or retired with disability acquired during fire control or emergency rescue operations and encouraged them to dedicate themselves to their learning in a stable financial environment.
“If it hadn’t been for a firefighter who held on to the control stick until the last moment of death in a firefighting helicopter crash in Gwangju in July, many casualties and lots of property damage could have occurred. Such a sense of responsibility and duty of firefighters who risk their own lives will serve as a force to lead this society and I hope that their children will grow into good members of society with a sense of pride,” said S-OIL Senior Vice President Lee Chang-jae. He also promised that “S-OIL will continue to be a staunch supporter of firefighter families.”
Since 2006, S-OIL has offered scholarships to children of fallen firefighters as part of the Hero Firefighters Support Program, granting 2.6 billion won to 887 children until this year. The refiner does not limit the number of children per family to benefit from this program. This year, among beneficiaries, 22 households received benefits given to two or more children.
In particular, this year, when the Firefighters Support Program enters its ninth year, it will be all the more meaningful since a previous university student who received a scholarship from S-OIL, is now serving as a firefighter, following in the footsteps of his father who was named as a Hero Firefighter. The new firefighter in question is Fire Lieutenant Lee Gi-woong (29), who is working in the 119 Rescue Department at the National Emergency Management Agency.
“I acutely felt the absence of my father in my childhood, so I became a firefighter to save others’ lives so that others would not suffer such pain,” said Fire Lieutenant Lee.” Whenever I received support from S-OIL, I could feel that there is someone out there who still remembers my father’s sacrifice and takes good care of my family.”
In addition to the donation of scholarships to children of fallen firefighters, the refiner confers the Firefighters of the Year Award, gives consolation money to the families of fallen firefighters and encouragement money to injured firefighters, and holds a Healing Camp for firefighters and their spouses. Through such diverse programs, S-OIL supports firefighters, the real heroes of our society, who bravely respond to danger to protect other people’s lives.
