In the face of war threat by North Korea, S-OIL kicked off the Hero Maritime Police Officers Program geared towards backing up maritime police officers of the Korea Coast Guard, which protects national security. This is the first time that a private company has signed an agreement for continuous sponsorship with the Korea Coast Guard.
S-OIL CEO Nasser Al-Mahahser signed the Korea Coast Guard Support Agreement with its commissioner Kim Suk-kyoon and Cha Heung-bong, chairman of the Korea National Council on Social Welfare, at the Korea Coast Guard headquarters in Yeonsu-gu, Incheon Metropolitan City on April 19, vowing to give continuous support to boost maritime police officers’ morale and pride.
To this end, S-OIL will provide a wide range of programs, including awards for exemplary maritime police officers, allowances for officers who sustained work-related injuries, visits to coastal historic sites for officers’ children, and scholarships for the children of fallen officers. For the first step of promised support, the refiner will donate 220 mil. won this year.
“I was deeply touched when I saw on TV maritime police officers who conducted rescue operations, struggling against high waves, and strong rains and winds to save crews from drifting or sinking cargo ships or ships on fire,” said CEO Al-Mahasher. “I regarded them as the hidden heroes of this time that S-OIL must support, so I prepared this event.”
He added, “I’d like to express my gratitude and respect as a resident of Korea to all maritime police officers who faithfully perform their duties, supporting safe maritime transport, keeping the safety of people living on remote islands, and rescuing people on beaches in difficult working conditions despite lack of social attention and support.”
“This agreement with S-OIL is truly meaningful since incumbent officers can receive benefits for the first time in the history of the Korea Coastal Guard, such as awards for hero maritime police officers and allowances for those who sustained work-related injuries,” said Korea Coastal Guard Commissioner Kim Suk-kyoon. “This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Korea Coastal Guard, which was established in 1953, so today’s agreement is all the more meaningful. S-OIL, which endeavors to build a beautiful world as the guardian of society and the environment, will set a good example for all corporations.”
Since 2006, S-OIL has conducted Hero Support Programs with the aim of discovering and supporting heroes who dedicate themselves to saving lives and property by risking their own in adverse working conditions. The Maritime Police Officers Program is the third Hero Support Program, following the Hero Firefighters Program and the Hero Neighbors Program.
Under the Hero Firefighters Program, which kicked off in 2006, S-OIL provides consolation money for firefighters who died or sustained injuries while on duty, offers scholarships to the children of deceased firefighters, and holds the Rest Camp for Firefighter Couples. In addition, the refiner has implemented the Hero Neighbor Support Program since 2008 to award exemplary citizens who sacrifice themselves to save their neighbors in danger.
