● Eight firefighters awarded as 2020 Hero Firefighters including Lee Sungha from Incheon Central Fire Station
● Hero Firefighter Campaign since 2006 to boost morale and support livelihood of firefighters


On Dec. 9th, S-OIL (RD & CEO Hussain Al-Qahtani) and Korea National Council for Social Welfare (Chairman: Suh Sangmok) presented award to eight 2020 hero firefighters including one Top Hero Firefighter and 90 million won of cash prize at 2020 Hero Firefighters Award Ceremony held at S-OIL Head Office in Mapo, Seoul. The ceremony was only attended by Top Hero Firefighter due to the pandemic.


S-OIL presented an award plaque with 20 million won of cash prize to Top Hero Firefighter Lee Sungha (42, Incheon Central Fire Station), who was recommended by National Firefighting Agency and KNCSW, and selected by the screening committee. The refiner also presented an award plaque and 1 million won of cash prize to each of the 7 Hero Firefighters including Kim Sangdo (44, Jeonju Deokjin Fire Station, Jeonbuk).


Lee Sungha of Incheon Central Fire Station was recognized as the 2020 Top Hero Firefighter for preventing a huge disaster as he ran to the fire scene just with a fire extinguisher and suppressed an initial fire, which broke out in Nonhyun-dong, Namdong-gu in Incheon on his way to work in October.


S-OIL also awarded 7 Hero Firefighters who sacrificed themselves at fire scenes to save lives of others. Kim Sangdo (44, Jeonju Deokjun Fire Station, Jeonbuk) was recognized as Hero Firefighter for rescuing 10 residents isolated in the flooded village due to the collapse of the riverbanks caused by torrential rain and sudden discharge of Seonjin River Dam in August. Kim Jeonkyu (45, Seongnam Fire Station, Gyeonggi) was awarded for saving residents and children from the fire, which broke out in an underground socks factory in Yangji-dong, Sujeong-gu, Seongnam in May, and Woo Jaewoong (46, Donggu Fire Station, Daegu) for rescuing a drawing person under Ayang Bridge in Daegu by going underwater at night in October.


S-OIL CEO Hussain Al-Qahtani expressed gratitude to the firefighters who go out of their ways to save others in risky situations but also asked them to take good care of themselves. He also added that he is proud of S-OIL’s hero firefighter program that expresses appreciation to firefighters and the Company will keep supporting firefighters with deepest respect.


With the hero firefighting campaign, over the past 15 years, S-OIL has ▲ presented condolence money to families of fallen firefighters (63) ▲ schooling expense to children of fallen firefighters(1,329) ▲ encouragement money to injured firefighters(336) ▲ refreshment camp to firefighters and their spouse(980) ▲ awarded hero firefighters(112).
