S-OIL awards “2013 Hero Neighbors”

● S-OIL names 22 “hero neighbors,” including one deceased person and four injured people.
● The refiner honors the spirit of sacrifice of ordinary citizens who took the lead in helping people in danger.

S-OIL Corporation (CEO Nasser Al-Mahasher or Na Se-il in Korean) held the “2013 Hero Neighbors Award” ceremony at its Head Office, Gongdeok-dong, Mapo, Seoul on Nov. 14, together with the Korea National Council on Social Welfare (KNCSW; Chairman Cha Heung-bong) to award  hero neighbors who made noble sacrifice to help fellow citizens in danger. At the ceremony, the refiner awarded 140 mil. won to 22 “hero neighbors”  who were selected on the recommendation of the National Police Agency and by deliberation of a panel of experts.

S-OIL granted 20 mil. won in consolation money to the family of the late Park Joong-ha (70). He was killed after being hit by a train on the Donghae line track in Jingu, Busan when he ran onto the track to save a neighbor who had slipped down onto it while working in a vegetable garden.

Also, the company presented trophies and award money to other brave citizens who showed great courage in dangerous situations. The list includes Kim Min-chul (35), who saw that a driver had fallen into the sea due to his unskilled driving in Tongyeong, South Gyeongsang Province.

He saved the driver by jumping into the sea. Also, there are Park Jong-man (31) and Kim Jae-sung (24), who ran to the scene of a crime to rescue a female being assaulted. They chased and arrested the suspect.

“Citizens who come forward ahead of others to help people in danger are the real heroes of our society,” said S-OIL CEO Nasser Al-Mahasher. “S-OIL will continue to remain a solid companion for brave neighbors through our Hero Neighbors Support Program.”

S-OIL has implemented the Hero Neighbors Support Program by signing an agreement with the KNCSW in 2008 in order to encourage and support those who save others from danger with their brave civic spirit.
