- Contribution to the petrochemical competitiveness with successful proceeding of 9.3 trillion Won ‘Shaheen Project’
- Outstanding leadership in establishing new growth engine through SAF supply and decarbonization roadmap
S-OIL CEO Anwar A. Al-Hejazi has won the Gold Tower Order of Industrial Service Merit for significantly contributing to Korea’s economy at the 2025 Foreign Company Day ceremony held at Grand Intercontinental Seoul Parnas on November 13th.
He was recognized as a person of merit for his significant contributions to enhancing fundamental competitiveness of domestic petrochemical industry and driving industry development by successfully proceeding Shaheen Project under his outstanding leadership. The 9.3 trillion Won project aims to proactively respond to energy transition and strengthen S-OIL’s petrochemical business portfolio for sustainable growth.
After completing the construction of TS&D Center at Magok complex in Seoul (Sept. 2023) to reinforce R&D of fuel & petrochemical businesses and lay the foundation for new growth engine technologies, the awardee acquired FID (Final Investment Decision, Nov. 2024) of Gas Turbine Generator Project (263 billion. Won) to reduce carbon emission, etc.
S-OIL’s continuous investment into its traditional and new business has led to the significant development of the nation’s economy as well. In August last year, S-OIL became the first domestic refiner to supply SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) for regular commercial flights.
“With this honor and strong support of the Korean government, S-OIL will strive for the successful delivery of Shaheen Project to elevate domestic petrochemical industry’s competitiveness and S-OIL to the next level.” the CEO said. “We intend this award to serve as an opportunity to expand business cooperation between Korea and Saudi Arabia as a strategic bridge in shaping future growth” he added.
S-OIL’s Shaheen Project is the largest petrochemical project in the nation’s history that will build one of the largest fuel & petrochemical steam crackers in the world. The project is strategically important both for Korea and Saudi Arabia as it will commercialize TC2C process, developed by S-OIL’s parent company Saudi Aramco, for the first time in the world. Furthermore, it is expected to significantly enhance fundamental competitiveness of domestic petrochemical industry currently challenged by large capacity addition in China.
The Saudi-born CEO Al-Hejazi, who majored in chemical engineering at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, joined Saudi Aramco in 1996. Since then, he gained vast experience in oil & gas facilities management, business development, investment localization, mega-project management and facility planning, etc. for 29 years. He was appointed as the Representative Director of S-OIL in May 2023.
Previously, he served as Representative Director of Aramco Asia Japan in 2016 and later as President of Aramco Asia in 2018 where he oversaw business in Asia including developing strategic joint venture investment with companies in Korea, China and Japan and building collaborative relations with business partners.
