S-OIL Confers Hero Firefighters Awards on 7 Firefighters
● S-OIL confers the title of “Best Hero Firefighter” on Fire Sergeant Moon Gwon-ju of Gwangsan Fire Station in Gwangju, and Fire Sergeant Gil Eun-gyung of North Daejeon Fire Station is named the first female Hero Firefighter.
- For eight years, the refiner has run the Hero Firefighters Support Program to boost firefighters’ morale and to provide financial support for their families.
● On Dec. 23, S-OIL also held an awards ceremony for exemplary maritime police officers and Korea Coast Guard branches.
S-OIL(CEO: Nasser Al-Mahasher) held the “2013 Hero Firefighters Award” ceremony at the auditorium of Seodaemun Fire Station in Seoul on Dec. 24 and presented plaques of appreciation and prize money to seven firefighters, who were selected as “Hero Firefighters.”
At the ceremony, S-OIL awarded a plaque of appreciation and a prize of 20 mil. won to Fire Sergeant Moon Gwon-ju (40, Gwangsan Fire Station in Gwangju) named as the “Best Hero Firefighter” on the recommendation of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Korea National Council on Social Welfare (KNCSW) and it gave a plaque of appreciation and a prize of 10 mil. won to Fire Sergeant Yoo Geun-sung (41, Seoul Gwangjin Fire Station) and five other firefighters. Fire Sergeant Moon was named the Best Hero Firefighter in recognition of dramatically rescuing six people buried under a collapsed new building in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, last June, after nine hours of desperate struggle. He has conducted about 5,800 rescue operations and fire control activities over the last 16 years.
In particular, this year’s Award gave attention to firefighters who undertook special duties during fire, rescue and disaster control operations. Fire Sergeant Gil Eun-gyung (48, North Daejeon Fire Station) was named the first female Hero Firefighter for saving many lives by doing CPR. Fire Sergeant and Helicopter Pilot Yang Suk-Moo (43, South Gyeongsang Fire Department) and Senior Fire Fighter Kim Jin-woo (37, Ulsan Fire Station) were also titled as Hero Firefighters in recognition of rescuing mountain climbers and putting out mountain fires.
“I’d like to express my respect and appreciation to those firefighters who commit themselves to protecting citizens’ lives and properties at many accident and disaster scenes as well as their families,” said S-OIL CEO Al-Mahasher. “I promise that S-OIL will be a staunch supporter of you, firefighters, who are the staunch heroes of the people.”
Since 2006, S-OIL has held the Hero Firefighters Award every year to reward dedicated firefighters who have risked their own lives on numerous occasions to rescue people in danger.
Meanwhile, on Dec. 23, a day earlier, CEO Al-Mahasher held the 2013 Hero Maritime Police Officers Award at the Korea Coast Guard headquarters in Yeonsu-gu, Incheon Metropolitan City in attendance with Commissioner Kim Suk-kyoon of the Korea Coast Guard, and Chairman Cha Heung-bong of the Korea National Council on Social Welfare. At the ceremony, Chief Superintendent Kim Dong-jin (51, Ship Donghaeseo 5001) was given plaques of appreciation and prize money for saving all of the 17 people on a sinking ship as six other exemplary maritime police officers were also given the same. Plaques and prize money were also given to 112 Rescue Services of the South Coast Guard for saving 45 citizens in total, including stranded fishermen and the same awards were also given to seven other outstanding organizations.
As part of the Hero Support Program, S-OIL signed the Korea Coast Guard Support Agreement with the Korea Coast Guard in April this year and is backing up the Korea Coast Guard, which takes risks on the frontline rescuing ships, preventing marine pollution, and cracking down on illegal fishing, and endeavoring to protect the sovereignty of Korea and the lives of its people.
